EMDR
What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a structured therapy approach that encourages the brain to store traumatic memories in a way that is helpful and decreases the negative symptoms some people experience after a traumatic event.
How does EMDR work?
EMDR uses a technique called bilateral stimulation to repeatedly activate different regions of the brain. EMDR is painless, I utilize a gentle tapping to facilitate the bilateral brain stimulation. This bilateral stimulation mimics brain activity that enhances the brain’s natural ability to process difficult or traumatic memories.
EMDR helps the brain reprocess memories that are stuck in a way that allows normal information processing to resume. EMDR can help people uncover and process beliefs that developed as the result relational traumas or childhood abuse and/or neglect. For a more detailed explanation please visit EMDR Institute, Inc.
What does EMDR help?
EMDR was originally established to help with symptoms related to PTSD, although research has proven it is also useful for the following conditions:
- Panic Attacks
- Complicated Grief
- Disturbing Memories
- Phobias
- Pain Disorders
- Anxiety
- Depression
If you struggle with past trauma or any of the other things described above, you may be a good candidate for EMDR therapy.
